This is a pretty simple step, but it is by far the most important.
Jan 21, I take a mattock and level the dirt around the tree down to the level of the surrounding dirt.
Then I dig around the tree and expose the roots and cut them below ground level with a sharp axe (this is the hardest part).

Aug 17, Use a chain saw or bow saw to cut the stump down as close to the ground as you can, without allowing the chain saw's teeth to strike the ground (this will dull your chain). Wear steel-toed boots for this part of the job. Drill holes a few inches deep into the stump in numerous places, using the biggest, widest drill bit you have.
Hold the chainsaw flat, with the starter side up.
I don't use my Stihls below the dirt but when I get my Poulan out, chain is cheaper for it and can replace the saw every year so far.
Bend over and place the bottom side and heel of the bar on the stump. Cut the stump as close to the ground as possible, without hitting your chain against the dirt or ground. Throttle the trigger fully and cut into the stump.
